ABOUT THE ARTIST

Inspiration from Nature My primary source of inspiration is nature. I do not seek to reproduce a specific landscape or a specific place, but instead I work to create a personal and abstract interpretation through structure and color. For me, nature is a means – Not a goal in itself. I don’t necessarily paint what I see in front of me, but rather, what I have seen, and what has left a mark on my memory. Abstraction and Memory The landscape functions as an archive of memories, which Dorthe Nors has expressed in her distinguished way. My works arise in a field of tension between the conscious and the unconscious; The painting process is about daring to let go and let yourself be led. One must let go of control and at the same time instruct the development of the image in one and the same movement. The Studio as a Laboratory My studio functions as a kind of laboratory for visual alchemy. This is where the colours appear when others disappear – just like when the sun moves over the landscape, or a leaf is turned in the wind. Layer by layer, the light is built up in the painting. This process creates a dynamic where the colors are constantly changing and affecting each other. Perception and Relativity Colours are relative, they arise in interaction with neighbouring colours. Similarly, the experience of the finished work is also relative and depends on the viewer’s own experience, knowledge and situation. Each person brings his own memories and associations along to look at a painting. Communication through Painting To me, painting is an attempt to communicate both consciously and unconsciously. I want my works to activate the viewer’s thoughts and create a pleasant, but also slightly disturbing presence. It is my hope that the paintings evoke different associations in the individual and opens up for reflection. Pia Andersen
