Luca Brandi

Luca Brandi is an Italian artist born in Florence in 1961, where he lives and works. He began painting at the age of nine, producing icons in Florentine churches under the guidance of a master. This early contact with image-making shaped a lasting attention to surface and to the act of painting. In 1980, he turned to abstraction. His first solo exhibition in 1986 marked the beginning of a career that has since developed in Italy and abroad.

Luca Brandi’s work unfolds within abstraction, without adhering to a single formal language. Lines circulate across the surface and suggest motifs without ever repeating. Elsewhere, the image opens into more diffuse fields, where marks appear and disperse, leaving traces.

Color functions as a conductor within the painting. It channels movement across the surface, linking areas and directing the gaze. In works reduced to black and white, contrast and density take on this role, carrying the same charge through the image.

Several works recall the language of printmaking. The surface appears pressed or inscribed, as if the image had been transferred rather than painted. Gesture and imprint overlap, giving the work its density.

Across these works, marks and traces accumulate to form unstable images. They may evoke organic growth, writing, mapping or memory. The surface becomes a space of projection, where different imaginaries can emerge.
