ABOUT THE ARTIST

Elise Eekhout is a visual artist working at the intersection image and text. She combines visual elements with language, fascinated by letters and their effect on us. The moment we begin to read, letters lose their physical form and meaning takes over — it is this moment of transition that she seeks to make visible in her work. Recurring themes in her work are memory, transformation, and our relationship with nature. From abstract landscapes to text-based compositions, she seeks to evoke both wonder and reflection. Her art connects the fragility of human stories with the enduring rhythms of the earth, offering viewers a space for contemplation.

ARTWORK STORY

Doggerland, the vast landscape that once connected Britain to continental Europe before disappearing beneath the rising seas. The painting is built from layers of text, silver leaf, ink, acrylic marker and silkscreen. The words shimmer and fade with the changing light, while the reflective surfaces evoke water — concealing and revealing fragments of the landscape. Rather than reconstructing Doggerland, I use it as a mirror for the landscapes we inhabit today.
