Pia Andersen
Born in Frederikshavn, Denmark, Pia Andersen lives and works between Copenhagen and Extremadura in southern Spain. Educated at the School of Arts and Crafts in Kolding and the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, she has spent more than three decades developing a body of work centred on landscape. Her travels across Europe and South America continue to shape her practice. Photography accompanies these journeys as a visual notebook, preserving moments that gradually mature before returning to the canvas.
Every painting begins with lived experience. The landscape passes through memory before becoming paint, carrying only what time has preserved: the warmth of sunlight across a hillside, the density of a forest or the openness of a distant horizon. Her paintings feel like fragments of reality translated into a deeply personal visual language. Colour replaces description, allowing the memory of a place to emerge with remarkable clarity.
Light occupies a central place in this process. It rises from successive layers of paint and seems to radiate from within the surface itself. One almost senses the movement of air, the shimmer of distant vegetation or the warmth that lingers after a summer afternoon. Her canvases possess a striking vitality, celebrating the way landscape is experienced through the body before it is understood by the eye.
Her sustained attention to changing light places her within a tradition established by the Impressionists, for whom painting became a way of capturing the fleeting experience of landscape. Her sensitivity to atmosphere also recalls the Nordic vision of Per Kirkeby, where memory and nature become inseparable. Yet Andersen’s paintings remain unmistakably her own. They celebrate the enduring bond between human experience and the natural world, revealing how landscapes continue to shape us long after they disappear from sight.
