Pin Vega
Pin Vega has used the term pictoesculturas for his work since the early 1990s. His practice moved away from conventional painting quite early. The works are made for the wall, but relief and depth are essential to how they are built and seen.
He grew up near Madrid and spent much of his childhood looking closely at nature. At eleven, he dived into the Guadalmellato reservoir and became fascinated by the coloured mineral formations beneath the water. Years later, similar structures began to appear in his work.
He entered the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid after already exhibiting and selling realist paintings. During his studies, he gradually moved towards three-dimensional work. At the beginning of the 1990s, Madrid was giving growing visibility to international sculpture. Seeing Anish Kapoor’s work there was particularly important for Pin Vega and confirmed a direction he had already begun to explore.
The connection is visible in his use of cavities and saturated pigment. In works such as Agujero blanco III, a precise opening changes the way the whole surface is read. Other pieces suggest mineral formations or sections of terrain through resin and irregular texture.
Pin Vega prepares much of the work himself. He makes his supports and grinds pigments before combining them with resin. This gives each piece a distinct physical character.
His career has developed through exhibitions in Spain and abroad. He received several awards early in his career. In 1995, four of his works were selected for Paco de Lucía’s Antología.
