ABOUT THE ARTIST

Oluwafemi Akanmu is a Nigerian mixed-media artist based in Ibadan, Nigeria, whose practice explores African identity, culture, human experiences, and the emotional stories that connect people. Working primarily with charcoal, acrylic, and mixed media, he combines deep charcoal tones, vibrant African colours, motifs, and patterns to create expressive figurative works. His work often reflects themes of identity, resilience, family, love, motherhood, fatherhood, and the complexities of everyday life. With a background in Fine and Applied Arts and experience in printmaking, painting, and linocut, Akanmu continues to develop a distinctive visual language that celebrates African narratives while connecting them to universal human experiences.

ARTWORK STORY

Weightless captures a suspended moment between control and release. His posture suggests not defeat, but acceptance a letting go of tension, burden, and the unseen trials that press upon the human form. freedom is often found not in resistance, but in surrender in the act of allowing oneself to fall, to rest, to breathe again. Weightless becomes both a visual and emotional meditation on resilience, transformation, and the liberation that comes from releasing what no longer serves us.
