Ilgvars Zalans is a Latvian contemporary painter whose practice explores gesture, space, memory, and the tension between structure and instability. Working primarily with acrylic and spray on canvas, he combines spontaneous physical mark-making with layered, often grid-like structures.
His paintings range from energetic, large-scale abstractions to quieter, more meditative works. Recent series such as Border Zone examine boundaries not as fixed lines, but as psychological and spatial conditions shaped by control, movement, memory, and disruption.
Zalans has exhibited and worked internationally, with projects, residencies, and performances across Europe and Asia, including Japan, China, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and the Philippines. His work has also been presented at international art fairs including SCOPE Miami Beach, SCOPE Basel, and Art Copenhagen.
Painting for Zalans is both an image and a trace of action — a record of movement, pressure, time, and place.
