ABOUT THE ARTIST

ANTONINO PULIAFICO Antonino Puliafico is an Italian contemporary painter whose work is distinguished by an intense, physical approach to oil painting. Working predominantly with the palette knife, he builds richly textured surfaces in which colour, light and material become inseparable. Landscapes, water, harbours, coastlines, trees and fragments of nature are recurring subjects in his work, yet Puliafico does not seek to reproduce reality literally. Instead, he transforms the landscape into an emotional experience. Familiar places become territories of memory and sensation, suspended between observation and abstraction. His paintings are characterised by generous layers of oil paint, vigorous palette-knife gestures and a strong sense of movement. The material itself becomes part of the image: ridges, overlapping colours and traces left by the knife capture and reflect light, giving the surface an almost sculptural presence. Colour plays a central role in Puliafico's visual language. Deep blues, luminous whites, vibrant reds, greens and unexpected chromatic contrasts create atmospheres that can shift from Mediterranean brightness to more intimate and contemplative moods. Many of his works are created on a large scale, allowing the viewer to experience the painting not simply as an image but as a physical presence. From Venetian reflections and lake landscapes to open seas, countryside and nocturnal scenes, nature becomes the starting point for a highly personal exploration of light, energy and emotion. The palette knife is not merely a technical tool in Puliafico's practice: it is part of his artistic identity. His gesture remains visible in every layer of paint, preserving the immediacy of the creative act. This relationship between gesture and matter continues through his signature. Rather than simply placing his name onto the finished surface, Puliafico often incises his signature directly into the paint, making it physically part of the artwork itself — a distinctive mark embedded in the same material from which the painting was created. Each work is therefore conceived as a unique encounter between matter, colour, light and memory. “I do not want to describe a landscape exactly as it appears. I want to preserve what remains of it inside me. I paint mainly with the palette knife because I need a direct relationship with the material. I spread, remove, overlap and carve the oil paint until light begins to emerge from the surface. For me, colour is not decoration. It is emotion, movement and memory. Sea, water, trees, cities and landscapes are often the starting point, but during the painting process they gradually lose their literal boundaries. What interests me is the moment when a real place becomes something remembered, imagined or felt. The traces of the palette knife remain visible because I want the painting to retain the energy of its creation. Even my signature is often incised into the paint: it is not something added afterwards, but another gesture within the work. I want the viewer to approach my paintings from a distance and then feel the need to come closer — to discover the layers, the cuts, the thickness of the oil and the small variations of light hidden within the surface.” Antonino Puliafico

ARTWORK STORY

Gondolas is a vibrant contemporary interpretation of Venice, where architecture, water, and the elegant rhythm of the boats merge into a richly textured composition. Painted entirely with a palette knife, the work is built through dense oil impasto and energetic directional strokes. The dark blue gondolas create a powerful visual rhythm across the foreground, while bridges, façades, and reflections dissolve into luminous fragments of red, white, violet, yellow, and blue.
