I am a Dutch-born artist living and working in Amsterdam. After a career in science and industry, I started a second career as an art maker. As a true colorist, I prefer the material side of painting: I love paint, color, and experimenting with canvases and mediums. I usually work on large canvases and primarily use acrylic paint, attempting to create effects such as glaze, gloss, transparency, and thick surface textures using various mediums and gels. My role models in modern and contemporary art are the 'true painting heroes' of Abstract Expressionism, but I also admire the more figurative Post-Expressionists and Pop Art painters. Coming from a graphic background, I find the prints ('druksels') of Hendrik Werkman inspiring due to the use of text and geographical forms in his work. More recently, I find inspiration in the work of contemporary landscape and portrait painters and in the idea of art as a holistic concept in which multiple disciplines such as slideshows, music, voiceovers, text, poetry, and archival material come together. In my recent work, I regularly investigate and comment on the use of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to explore, challenge, and develop creativity and ideation.
