Massimo Orsi

Living and working between Alessandria and Rome, Massimo Orsi belongs to the generation that grew up during Italy’s post-war economic boom and came of age in the highly consumer-driven culture of the 1980s. He recalls the shop windows of provincial Alessandria filling with fashion labels and designer names, while his own sense of rebellion found an outlet in punk music and rock concerts. This fascination with logos and their growing presence in everyday life would later become central to his work.

When he moved to Rome and began his artistic career in the early 1990s, graphic experimentation was joined by an increasing interest in material. Visits to the Castello di Rivoli introduced him closely to Arte Povera, while contemporary American Neo-Geo artists offered another model through their use of plexiglass, aluminium, industrial enamels and neon. His early light boxes brought these concerns together.

The artist eventually decided to concentrate his practice around a single sign. Starting from the familiar expression “OK”, he repeated and rotated the letters to create a square ideogram. The gesture has something knowingly contradictory about it: he created his own logo at the very moment he was becoming increasingly critical of the culture of branding that had surrounded him in his youth.

The logo resembles a commercial mark, but there is no product behind it. Massimo Orsi repeats it, cuts it apart and partially hides it, testing how its meaning changes with each context.

There is an evident connection with Pop Art in this appropriation of commercial visual language. His interest, however, lies particularly in the apparent certainty of the message itself. “OK” is one of the most ordinary expressions of approval, repeated almost automatically. In his work, that familiarity becomes increasingly ambiguous.

Painting remains his principal medium, although his practice also includes installation and experimental materials. His work has been exhibited regularly since the early 1990s, through solo exhibitions and institutional projects across Italy.
