Malgorzata Krakowiak

Malgorzata Krakowiak

Malgorzata Krakowiak’s work is shaped by a long relationship with painting and textile. Across her practice, material and gesture come together in works that feel both carefully constructed and quietly intuitive.

Malgorzata Krakowiak grew up in a family of artists, surrounded by easels, looms, wool and paint. She later trained in both painting and artistic textiles, two disciplines that have remained closely connected throughout her career.

Her practice has developed through painting, fibre art, textile objects and installation, often organised in distinct series. Working in cycles allows her to return to an idea over time and explore it through changing materials, colours and formats.

Her work can also be situated within the broader tradition of Fiber Art, particularly the strong Polish textile scene that gained international recognition from the 1960s onwards. In this context, fibre became an autonomous artistic medium with sculptural and spatial qualities. Trained in both painting and textile art, Malgorzata Krakowiak develops this legacy through her own dialogue between colour, material and surface.

Since moving to Mallorca in 2018, the island’s light, landscape and natural textures have become an important source of inspiration. These influences are particularly visible in the ongoing SUBLIMAT series. Minimal compositions evoke abstract landscapes and more elusive, almost mystical spaces. Built through layers of oil pastel and acrylic on canvas, the works translate the logic of weaving into painting and continue ideas developed in her earlier textile objects. Their slow, meditative process is also central to the sense of quiet that characterises the series

The artist describes painting and fibre art as two complementary sides of her practice. Painting offers a more immediate and energetic form of expression, while textile work is slower and more meditative. Moving between them creates a balance between outward expression and a more introspective process.

Her career spans several decades and includes museum exhibitions, solo and group shows, international art fairs and numerous awards in painting and contemporary textile art. Her works are held in public and private collections internationally.
