Joseph Adolphe
Born in Calgary, Canada, Joseph Adolphe studied at the Alberta College of Art and Design before completing an MFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York. His practice is rooted in figurative painting, with a particular interest in the expressive possibilities of the medium.
His garden paintings are especially revealing. Broad strokes of colour accumulate into dense vegetation, with individual leaves occasionally emerging from the surrounding paint. The compositions approach abstraction through their treatment of light and the freedom of the brushwork. This sensitivity places his work within the wider tradition of expressive figuration.
The Locutions series introduces a more enigmatic imagery. Large folded forms hover above expansive landscapes reminiscent of the Canadian prairies of his childhood. Their carefully suggested volume contrasts with the loosely painted backgrounds. The improbable scale of these objects gives the compositions a distinctly dreamlike character.
Joseph Adolphe has himself drawn parallels with Symbolist poetry and its capacity to suggest meaning through imagery. The suspended forms first appeared in his imagination without any particular explanation. As he continued painting them, they became something like personal messages, reminders of the possibilities he wanted to believe in. He has spoken of how these works encouraged him to become a better father and teacher, and of the persistence required to preserve that sense of optimism.
His animal paintings reveal another aspect of his work. A bull’s imposing body emerges from a few forceful strokes, its anatomy only partly defined. Joseph Adolphe often depicts these animals in the moments before a confrontation, drawing on a long tradition in history painting of concentrating drama in the anticipation of an event. The fight remains unseen. The animal’s stillness carries the weight of what is about to happen, along with the awareness of its possible fate.
The visible brushwork gives his paintings an immediacy that suits their emotional content. Even at their most expressive, the images retain a remarkable sense of intimacy.
Joseph Adolphe has exhibited extensively in the United States and internationally. Alongside his painting career, he teaches drawing and painting at St. John’s University in New York.
