Martin Wojnowski

Martin Wojnowski began his artistic career in the early 1990s, producing watercolour illustrations of interiors for London designers. He soon began altering these commissioned spaces by introducing unexpected details: a figure hidden in a corner, an object moved out of place, a subtle disturbance within an otherwise ordered room. This early impulse continues to define his work.

His paintings often begin with spaces that feel immediately accessible: bedrooms, corridors, living rooms, terraces or city interiors. Their apparent familiarity is gradually unsettled by elements that do not quite belong. An astronaut appears in a domestic hallway, birds occupy an interior, or an animal enters a carefully arranged room. The resulting tension can recall René Magritte, particularly in the way an ordinary setting is made strange through the precise placement of an improbable element.

Martin Wojnowski is less interested in constructing a fully fantastic world than in testing how little a familiar image needs to change before its meaning shifts and architecture plays an important role in this process. Doors, windows and thresholds repeatedly organise the composition and separate different spaces while suggesting that another reality may exist just beyond the visible scene.

His imagery draws on personal memories, current events, myths and stories gathered through travel. These references accumulate within the painting and leave room for uncertainty, irony and contradiction. Strong colour and staged compositions give the works an immediate visual clarity, while their symbolic details reward a slower reading.

Travel remains central to his practice and has broadened the cultural references that enter his paintings. His work has been exhibited internationally, with presentations in London, Barcelona, Dubai, Paris, Madrid and Miami, and has attracted collectors in Europe and the United States.
