ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rokita is a contemporary Puerto Rican artist living and working in Pittsburgh, PA. Through her work, she hopes to illuminate the vital intersection of mapping, indigenous knowledge, and environmental stewardship, using creativity as a tool for advocacy and change. She aims to inspire a deeper connection to the planet and to one another - fostering a dialogue about ecological challenges, amplifying diverse voices and indigenous knowledge, and challenging systems that perpetuate both environmental degradation and gender inequality.

ARTWORK STORY

An homage to the island of Puerto Rico and made in response to the water crisis. Inspired by Taino symbolism found on ancient artifacts such as water vessels, duhos, and zemis. The Taino spiral is used heavily, a symbol for water or wind. The name of this painting is partially a translation of Jatibonicu. In the Arawak/Taíno language, Jatibonicu translates to "The Great People of the Sacred High Waters," referencing sacred mountain waterfalls.
