[Focus] Oleksii Gnievyshev, “Nest”, 2024
Oleksii Gnievyshev, “Nest”, 2024, Oil on canvas, 60 × 80 × 2 cm
A female body floats horizontally in dark water, eyes closed, arms partially submerged. Light sculpts the skin with precision against deep blue-black tones. Resting on her abdomen, a fragile nest shelters small birds, while a larger bird stands nearby. The composition is silent and controlled, balancing exposure with protection.
Rendered in meticulous academic realism, the painting builds tension between vulnaribility and strength. The dark water suggests life’s inevitable challenges, while the nest introduces ideas of protection and rebirth. The body becomes both fragile and sustaining.
The image subtly recalls the Pre-Raphaelite tradition, particularly the floating female figure associated with John Everett Millais. Like the nineteenth-century painters, Gnievyshev privileges detailed naturalism and symbolic atmosphere. Yet instead of tragic surrender, he proposes regeneration. Instead of dissolving into the water, the figure carries life.
Trained at the Kyiv Academy of Arts and shaped by rigorous classical instruction, Oleksii Gnievyshev demonstrates strong technical command. Based in Germany since 2014, he has exhibited internationally, including at Discovery Art Fair Cologne, Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam and ART MUC Munich.
